Duke Library Refworks Bibliography

Every Duke graduate is entitled to one free RefWorks account. 

Get a RefWorks alumni account

  • Log into the Duke Alumni Directory.
  • Select Benefits then Library Resources.
  • Click the link Instructions for creating an alumni account, locatedbeside the RefWorks icon.

Want to move your current account into your new alumni account?  First, back up your current account:

  • Log into your current RefWorks account.
  • From the Tools menu, select Backup & Restore.
  • By default, References, Attachments and RSS Feeds are selected for backup.  If you do not wish to include your references, attachments and RSS feeds, deselect the appropriate option.
  • Click Perform Backup
  • Save the file when prompted. If you are not prompted to save the file, select Click here to save your backup file.
  • Your file will be saved as a .zip or .rwb file.  Do not change the extension of the file.

Now, move your backed up account into your new alumni account: 

  • Log in to your new RefWorks alumni account.
  • From the Tools menu, select Backup & Restore.
  • Select Restore.
  • Browse for the appropriate backup file.
  • Select Include References, Attachments and RSS Feeds, as desired
  • Click Perform Restore.

Troubleshooting common RefWorks problems

  1. I am having difficulty exporting references from a database.
  2. I am having difficulty exporting references from Google Scholar.
  3. I am having difficulty exporting references from Web of Science.
  4. I want to transfer my references from EndNote to RefWorks.
  5. The references I have exported from databases do not appear in my "Last Imported" folder.
  6. I'm a Mac user. Will Write-N-Cite work with my computer?
  7. I am leaving Duke. How can I save my RefWorks library?
  8. I still have questions. How can I learn more?

I am having difficulty exporting references from a database.

  • Check RefWorks' help documentation.
  • Under the heading "Getting References Into Your Account" in the contents menu, select "Importing from Online Data vendors."
  • Search the list for your database, and follow the detailed instructions.
  • Be sure that your pop-up blocker is off and that RefWorks and the databases you use are "trusted sites" in your browser.

I am having difficulty exporting references from Google Scholar.

Select the "Scholar Preferences" link at the top of the Google Scholar results screen. Scroll down to "Bibliography Manager." Select "Show links to import citations into..." and choose "RefWorks" from the dropdown menu. Select "Save Preferences." You should now see an "Import into RefWorks" link after each citation. Use this to export an individual citation to RefWorks (unfortunately, you may not export multiple citations from RefWorks).

I am having difficulty exporting references from Web of Science.

  • In order to export directly from Web of Science, you must first log in to RefWorks.
  • Once you're logged in to your RefWorks account, check the citations you'd like to export.
  • Click "Save to RefWorks" in Web of Science.

I want to transfer my references from EndNote to RefWorks.

It is fairly easy to switch to RefWorks from other bibliographic management programs like EndNote. Check RefWorks' specific instructions for importing citations from EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager or other tools.

References I export from databases do not appear in my Last Imported folder.

Be sure that the pop-up blocker is disabled in your web browser.

In Firefox:

  • Choose Tools > Options > Content
  • Uncheck "Block pop-up windows."

In Internet Explorer:

  • Choose Tools > Internet Options > Privacty Options
  • Uncheck "Turn on pop-up blockers."

I'm a Mac user. Will Write-N-Cite work with my computer?

Yes. Refworks support has instructions for installing WNC on a Mac.

I am leaving Duke, how can I save my RefWorks library?

There are a few different options for saving your RefWorks library.

You can back up your citations on your computer by using the Backup & Restore feature.

  • Select Tools
  • Select Backup & Restore.
  • Click the Perform Backup button.
  • All folders with citations are automatically included. A copy of your database will be downloaded to your computer in a zipped file. This file may only be used by utilizing the Restore function for a new RefWorks account.
  • If you move to another institution with RefWorks or if you use a Duke alumni RefWorks account, you can use the Restore function within your new account to upload your library.

You may also export your references from RefWorks and then import them into a different citation manager. The importing process will differ somewhat depending on the new tool you choose.
